Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen | Pavilion KL

Tonkatsu, is a Japanese food which consists of a breaded, deep-fried, boneless, bite-sized pork cutlet served with sliced cabbage (‘katsu’ means deep fried and ‘ton’ means pork cutlet). in Tonkatsu, there are two types of pork specialty: hire and rosu (also known as pork fillet and pork loin respectively). you'll find this restaurant located just next to Ben's. on arrival, we were welcomed and greeted by friendly staffs.

#1   SET MENU - Buta Shogayaki Zen   RM26
pan saute pork belly with ginger sauce served with sliced cabbage, tofu, pickled vegetables (Tsukemono), pork vegetable miso soup, and rice. selections in Tonkatsu's menu are somewhat limited, and many foods are deep-fried. if you prefer something which is not deep-fried, Buta Shogayaki Zen is definitely a good choice.

I enjoyed de aroma and great taste of their hot steamed white rice. miso soup on de other hand, is very flavourful. I'm not really a fan for miso soup but I have to admit that this is my favourite. unlike de ordinary miso soup with seaweed, just take a look at de hidden ingredients: shitake mushroom, pork, carrot, and radish cubes. another good thing is that their sliced cabbage and miso soup are refillable!

#2   SET MENU - Rosu Katsu Zen   RM27
breaded pork loin cutlet served with sliced cabbage, tofu, pickled vegetables, pork vegetable miso soup, and rice. these pork cutlet are coated with Japanese bread crumbs (panko) before deep-fried to create a juicy pork encased within a crispy golden brown layer. most importantly, it did not have de oily after taste. besides that, de wedge of lemon and de finely sliced cabbage also add a refreshing taste in contrast to de savoury Tonkatsu. some cabbage may come with pungent cabbage smell but I felt it was alright for Tonkatsu's.

your customized Tonkatsu sauce-
i) grind sesame seeds, ii) add sauce, iii) mix together
grind de roasted sesame seeds and add some special Tonkatsu sauce (Worcestershire sauce) in de mortar and pestle to taste. de lovely aroma of de sesame seeds gives a very appetizing sweet and sour sauce. remember to add de flavoured oil to your sliced cabbage to enhance de taste too.

if you don't really like pork (ehemmm...), there are several options of tonkatsu use alternatives to pork, such as chicken katsu and ebi katsu (prawn). Tonkatsu definitely worth a return visit =)
