Hong Kong: marathon and food hunt

DESTINATION : HONG KONG (香港)
Travel period : 13-180214

it took me a while to organize this post since it covered different types of food in different areas of HK. although we didn't have sufficient time to explore Macau because de boy was pretty exhausted after his half marathon, this trip was quite a fruitful one. I have arranged these places according to MTR location since we travelled most of de time using Octopus Card (HK smart card). for Octopus Card, it can be easily purchased at de airport kiosk near de exit of express train.

MTR Tin Hau 天后.
Standard Chartered HK Marathon.

race kit collection for de runners at Victoria Park.
we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for this event. and you know what, his was not de only crazy runner who came all de way to join this run.

post half marathon at HK Day 4.
it was a very well organised event. maybe a wee too cold for a first time runner but de boy did enjoy it. #achievementunlocked21km

MTR Jordan
Parkes St.
honestly, by looking at its queue I almost gave up but luckily de boy persuaded me not to. if you're an egg lover, this is definitely a must-go place.

don't be deterred by long queue, de turnover rate is faster than what you would expect.
we were seated at a corner just nice for two or else we would most probably ended up with HK-style table sharing. if two were to dine at a square table for four, they must be seated side-by-side, not face-to-face. in general, service in HK is hectic and customers are required to order on spot or immediately once they are seated. however, throughout these days I think they sort of used to non-locals who are generally 'slow' and instead they will just walk away and maybe curse you elsewhere come back when you're ready (you need to call them). but still, it is better to 'know your order' to keep your dining experience pleasant. and of course, speaking Cantonese is definitely a plus point.

#1   Egg Pudding w/ Almond (hot)
#2   Steamed Milk & Egg White (hot)
I swear de scrambled egg is totally awesome and it is de best that I've eaten in my life. it was sooooo creamy and fluffy.

#4   Ham, Egg & Toast
#5   Milk Tea
ham and it is bread toast were a huge disappointment, bread was dry with cold butter and ham looked like it was ran under boiling water. milk tea was really bland and average although de stainless steel cup did create a wrong perception at first sight.

MTR Central 中環.
Victoria Peak
upon arrival at MTR Central Station, take de J2 exit. it will take approximately 10 minutes walk to reach de Peak Tram Lower Terminus.

foggy and cold weather at The Peak.
weather wasn't in favour and this was perhaps de best picture we could get. don't bother to sit on de right of de tram (as recommended by everyone) for better views of HK's skyline in de uphill direction because: i) time is too short to enjoy, ii) awkward to stand you will block others' view and also for safety reason.

Bruce Lee at entrance of wax musuem.

The Peak Galleria.
crowned as one of de Michelin star awarded restaurants, Mak's noodle has a reputation in serving one of de best wonton noodle in HK too many Michelin star awarded restaurants in HK don't you think so?

from upper left and clockwise:
#1   Prawn Roe Noodle
#3   Pork & Shrimp Dumpling in Soup 水餃 ---recommended
true enough, shrimp wonton and pork dumpling were my favourite. they were flavourful and crunchy with a whole shrimp. however, I personally do not favour de thin noodle texture which is slightly dry, and more stringy in HK. de serving was considerably small in a tiny bowl, plus it didn't come cheap too. de prawn roe noodle was a total failure (too dry!) and not worth de pricein HK, dried noodle is usually mixed with oyster sauce which I think is less superior to black soy sauce.

The Sweet Dynasty 糖朝, The Peak Galleria.

from upper left and clockwise:
#1   Barrel Tau Fu Fah
#2   Shrimp Filling Wrapped in Bean Curd Sheet
#3   Steamed Egg Custard Bun
#4   Pomelo & Mango Sago Soup
not de best tau fu fan in town, but it was served in a unique way- in a barrel: i) scoop from de barrel, ii) put into bowl and add honey, iii) ready to eat. I like de shrimp bean curd partly due to de generous portion given, and it should be eaten with vinegar as chilli sauce was rather an alien thing here. others I just find them mediocre stingy pomelo and I think mango is hard to get here.
Happy Valentine's Day at The Peak.
with fog, I mean with love.

Wellington St.
this is a famous restaurant known for its name and history. de restaurant setting is nice and staffs are generally 'more attentive' at least they don't treat you like you owe them somethingback in those day, Yung Kee used to serve de best roasted goose in HK but now a lot has claimed that de food standard has dropped. as we did not make a reservation, we have to wait for a table according to their numbering system. they do provide a waiting area with seats but there is no guarantee to avoid service chaos at peak hours.

from upper left and clockwise:
#1   Century Egg w/ Pickled Ginger 皮蛋酸薑 ---highly recommended
#2   Egg Tart
#3   Roasted Goose/Char Siew
#4   Char Siew Pao
food was slightly pricey, and I agreed that it was below expectation including de roasted goose which has thick fat layer with oil burst in your mouth. among those food that we ordered, I think de true star in Yung Kee belonged to de century egg. you have my words because I usually don't take century egg.

Tsim Chai Kee Noodle 沾仔記, Wellington St.
we would love to find out whether Tsin Chai Kee or Mak has de best wonton noodle, given that de rivalry Mak has another outlet located just across de road.

from top to bottom:
#1   King Prawn Wonton Noodle 招牌雲吞麵 ---recommended
#2   Three Toppings Noodle (wonton/fish ball/sliced beef)
also served with signature gigantic crunchy wonton, seriously I didn't know which to choose knowing that dried noodle is always my preference. in Tsim Chai Kee, they have limited choice of selections which are all soup-based. again, noodle texture was de thin stringy type but as compared to de quantity given, no doubt Tsim Chai Kee won hands down. in addition, their sliced beef has a very tender texture. fish ball not really of a surprise but mimicked de appearance of a pork ball.

Wellington St.
in effort of searching a good cup of favourite HK-style milk tea, we have tasted some which were watery, bland, and not even close to satisfaction. out of de constant disappointment, I'm really glad that Tsui Wah is able to produce a cup of milk tea that satisfied my taste buds. there are a lot of Tsui Wah outlets around de area so not to worry that you will overlook this place.

from upper left and clockwise:
#1   HK-style Milk Tea (hot) 港式奶茶 ---highly recommended
#2   Homemade Fish Balls in Fish Soup
their HK-style milk tea was silky smooth, and well balanced with tea and milk. not forgetting de yummy crispy bun with condensed milk which was also one of their signatures worth trying (it doesn't contain pork as described in its name in Cantonese). on de contrary, their tea mix 鴛鴦 was overloaded with coffee. for fish balls and fish cakes, they claimed to be de best but it was questionable.

Lan Fong Yuen 蘭芳園, Gage St.
(close on Sunday)
being de place that long claimed to have de best milk tea, Lan Fong Yuen is definitely one of our must visit place. for our last few days in HK, we were glad that it was finally open as we dropped by a few times but it was closed on de first few days of Chinese New Year.

from top to bottom:
#1   Silky Milk Tea
#3   Dried Nissin Noodle w/ Chicken Cutlets
I personally think de milk tea was kinda overrated. to me, it was a soulless cup of tea diluted with milk. pork chop bun was served using a burger bun, good not great but it was de best throughout our trip. nissin noodle didn't really have de taste that I fancy but de chicken cutlets given were generous. we were expecting impolite staffs as usual but surprisingly they were pretty nice and funny too. here's a bit of local teaching, if you want to order something without vegetables, you can tell them to 'zaau cheng' 走青 (vegetables). 走 'zaau' means avoid. for instance, you can 'zaau yao' 走油 (oil) ; 'zaau lat' 走辣 (spicy) ; 'zaau yim' 走盐 (salt) ; 'zaau tong' 走糖 (sugar) 走面走肉走鱼蛋走佬 etc. and for those who understand Cantonese, we know we don't speak like this in Malaysia.

Stanley St.

from upper left and clockwise:
#1   Pineapple Bun w/ Butter 波蘿油 ---recommended
#2   Egg Tart 蛋撻 ---highly recommended
#3   HK-style Milk Tea (hot)
while we were hesitating whether to order pineapple bun w/ or without butter (for only a few seconds), that awkward moment happened when de waitress (a middle-aged aunty) told us, "all Taiwanese like pineapple bun w/ butter, order pineapple bun w/ butter lahhh". she thinks she knows everything and I cannot tahan I corrected heranyway, we were satisfied with our tea session. loving de egg tart with flaky crust. ahhh.. it was so addictive!

Wellington St.

from left to right:
#1   Satay Beef Brisket Noodle
#2   Flat Rice Noodle w/ Cuttlefish Ball and Seaweed
I didn't really care how many cuttlefish balls were given because they were tasteless even though it was claimed to be one of their signatures. satay noodle was another wrong choice for a Malaysian. totally not worth a return visit.

Stone Slabs Street 石板街, Central.

MTR Causeway Bay
Lockhard Road.
originate from Macau, this is another steamed milk pudding specialist with four outlets opened in HK. we would find out whether Yee Shun or Australia Dairy Company has de best steamed milk pudding.

from upper left and clockwise:
#1   Double Milk Pudding (hot)
#2   Papaya Milk
#3   French Toast 西多士
surprisingly, I did not favour de thin layer of 'skin' on top of de double milk pudding which was regarded as their specialty (and I thought it was due to de reheat effect of more than several times). taste wise, it reminded me of baby milk and it was also slightly sweeter compared to Australian Dairy Company. do be careful with de milk pudding as it can be too hot for your tongue to handle. tips for eating right is to go around de edge of de pudding with your spoon (apply to all steamed milk pudding). for french toast, we've had better ones in Mong Kok (pls continue reading).

#freewifi

shopping street at Causeway Bay.

local fashion brand popular amongst youngsters :CHOCOOLATE.
I got myself a ladies graphic tee for HKD99.

tramways, known as 'Ding Ding' 丁丁 by de locals.
awww.. too bad I didn't get to experience my Ding Ding ride =/

Matheson St.

from top to bottom:
#1   Roasted Goose/Char Siew/Chicken
#2   Stir-Fried Rice Noodle w/ Beef
knowing that HK is famous for roasted meat, this is a bang on de head telling me that not all are fabulous. anyway, we met a few staffs who were more polite than other people here. #goodpeople

MTR East Tsim Sha Tsui 東尖 - Tsim Sha Tsui 尖沙咀 - Jordan 佐敦.
i) Avenue of Stars
to reach de Avenue of Stars, de closest MTR would be East Tsim Sha Tsui Station. de place is named as such because it is a collection of well-known and I don't know who celebrities' handprints and autographs along de pathway. besides de nice view along Victoria Harbour, another attraction would be de Symphony of Lights that is shown at 8pm daily. honestly, I lost interest in de show very quickly as it was merely forgettable. weak music and weak lights basically sums up everything.

McDull 麥兜 in gold.

ii) Hong Kong Avenue of Comic Stars Kowloon Park.
de reason for it of course is to foster de development of HK comic industryI was only able to recognise a few characters but not all. and remember to try LKK egg waffles that is just opposite de road!

saying hi to McDull again.

King's Road.
although de place is not exactly hidden, it's not so obvious that you may not even notice until you see a bee line.

Egg waffles 雞蛋仔 ---highly recommended
this egg-shaped waffle is crispy on de outside, nearly hollow on de inside but soft. if you're looking for a good egg waffle, try this.

Lock Road.

#1   Iced Lemon Tea

from upper left and clockwise:
#2   Portuguese Egg Tarts 葡式蛋撻 ---recommended
#3   Dried Nissin Noodle w/ Spicy Pork Neck
#4   Pineapple Bun
#5   Macanese Crispy Pork Chop Bun
we visited this place as a compensation for not going to Macau. true enough, I believed de food was not as good as those found in Macau. every bun-related meals were kinda dry. of all, Portuguese egg tart was my favourite.

Hui Lau Shan
this is a chain dessert shops based in HK and I need not introduce much as we do have it in Malaysia. in HK, you can find Hui Lau Shan almost at everywhere. and of course, we were also interested to find out how de true Hui Lau Shan would taste.

although some have claimed that HK Hui Lau Shan was more yummy and fresh, but I just couldn't taste any major difference over here. I guess de problem with chain outlets is to have their quality control in control. you will get good desserts if you visit de right place and likewise, you may get a bad Hui Lau Shan if you visit de wrong place.

MTR Mong Kok
Bute St.
this place claimed to have de best pineapple bun in town. unfortunately, we missed de golden chance for their famous pineapple bun w/ butter 得獎波蘿油 as we only visited de place near late evening.

from top to bottom:
#1   Gigantic Pork Chop Bun
#3   Iced Milk Tea
their awarded french toast was also delicious although de picture might not tell anything because they all looked de same. pork chop bun was nothing to shout about ohh its gigantic bun not pork chop. and if you're doubtful with de milk tea, please order iced instead of hot. seriously, I couldn't believe a good cup of hot milk tea is that hard to find in HK!

Mong Kok street food.
you must at least digest some of these otherwise it will be like visiting Malaysia without nasi lemak.

one of de must-try street food would definitely be de curry fish ball. not exactly like our curry, HK version is very mild and it is more to satay-curry taste. for those who like street food, I think Kai Kei Snack (Dundas St.) is a good choice. they even offer smelly tofu. I would not recommend a random pick for egg waffles.

MTR Yau Ma Tei
Hing Kee has a few different outlets in Temple Street which are located exactly beside near to each other. from de appearance, they didn't seem inviting at all and in fact they were like those often shown in TVB drama where de gangsters would hang around and at anytime they might engage in a fight. de queue was testing our patience hence we ended up at de outlet with de shortest queue.

from top to bottom:
#1   Typhoon-Shelter style Clams
#2   Fried Oyster Omelette
#3   Preserved Sausage & Pork Ribs Clay Pot Rice
perhaps to make de term for typhoon-shelter easier is to translate it into garlic chilli. I was expecting de clay pot rice to be more flavourful but found it a bit bland. as to de taste, you will need to pour some black soy sauce and cover (it comes with a cover lid) for few minutes to enrich de flavour. at first, we were quite reluctant to add in de black soy sauce as de tip of de bottle looked kinda 'mouldy'. de funny moment was that we felt de two local policemen who shared de same table were teaching us de proper ways to eat a clay pot rice 'indirectly' (indeed a humble way based on their conversation) because I admit me and de boy acted amateur. overall, it was a good experience but nothing to remember. personally I think clay pot rice in Malaysia tastes better.

our last meal in HK: Café de Coral 大家樂, Hong Kong International Airport.
they even provide sealed packaging for take away service if you wish to bring de roasted goose home.

#1   Roasted Goose/ Chicken
#2   Roasted Goose/ Char Siew
I would highly recommend roasted goose because I did not taste anything better than this back at home. de sour plum sauce has a synergistic effect.

yummy =)

can I have some Belacan Kangkung now?
