Road trip | Singapore

DESTINATION : SINGAPORE
Travel period : 0612-091214

I prefer flight or coach to drive because :
i) you put yourself on higher risk for DVT due to long drive (queue at Causeway is really crazy)
ii) you woke up next day finding yourself with unexplained knee pain (probably due to long drive) and your gf asked you to give up running your full marathon
iii) you get upset for not owning de SCMS finisher's tee
iv) you get more upset to see people around you with SCMS finisher's tee
v)... you gain a day spending more time on food

1) PAUL | Takashimaya, Orchard Road.

nearest MRT: Orchard
this beautiful eye-catching French cafe is just what you need especially after a long day of shopping. there's always been a decent crowd in Paul so do prepare for a bit of a wait, and my advice is do not go with too much of expectation- go for their sweet menu!

from upper right and clockwise:
#1 Creme Brûlée  SGD$7.90--- recommended
#2 Pain au Chocolat (SGD$2.60) & Eclair Chocolat (SGD$6.80)
#3 Crepe Chocolat  SGD$6.00
#4 Tartelette Multifruits  SGD$7.20
chocolate craver would not be satisfied with de chocolate used in desserts and pastries because it wasn't rich enough. chocolate croissant was also kinda stingy with de chocolate filling as well. I would recommend creme brûlée but to start you would need to hit and crack de thick (thicker than usual) caramelised topping with a spoon like how you break open a soft boiled egg.

seriously, I think these heartless coffee were from coffee machine. guess which is my cappuccino?

2) Symmetry Cafe | Jalan Kubor.
nearest MRT: Bugis
to reach this place it only takes about 5-10mins walk from Bugis MRT station.
not with de typical kind of cafe setting, Symmetry uses rustic materials as their interior decor. walking into Symmetry (cemetery) that located at Jalan Kubor (kubur in Malay = cemetery) and opposite a Muslim cemetery, I would recommend to have brunch here instead of dinner.

choices of food were rather limited as it was truly a bastard Monday. nonetheless, we love de gingerbread man who happily bathed in our coffee.

Truffle Egg & Bacon  SGD$18.00
bacon was kinda waxy. de truffle scrambled egg was soft and wet but you have to eat it while it was hot. de dish was mediocre as de toast didn't really make a good match. I have to say Wild Honey served a better toast although de price could double.

Chicken & Portobello Burger  SGD$20.00--- recommended
truffle fries was something new to us. de smell of truffle oil was discernible and kinda special to taste. in my opinion, I think burger was a slightly better choice.

3) The Daily Scoop | Jalan Merah Saga,Chip Bee Gardens.
nearest MRT: Holland Village
there are a wide range of ice-cream flavours available in The Daily Scoop, including de liquor ice-cream. we enjoyed The Daily Scoop de most because its selections of flavour are much more interesting compared to KL, even though KL is catching up closely nowadays.

Salted Mr Brown & Musang King Ice-cream with Waffle
musang king definitely win hands down and is highly recommended. this is probably de best and genuine durian ice-cream I've ever had in my life. depending on your choice, a classic waffle plus an addition scoop of premium ice-cream will cost about SGD$10.00.

Elaine & Jason.

4) Tim Ho Wan 添好运 | Plaza Singapura, Orchard Road.
nearest MRT: Dhoby Ghaut
this place is well-known for de Michelin star award although I have yet to try de original outlet in Hong Kong. in Singapore, crowds has descended a little (but just started in Malaysia) but minimum at least 30 mins queuing or longer time may still be required especially during peak hour. in my humble opinion, I think Tim Ho Wan is not any far superior than other dim sum chains don't bother to waste time for long queue. de only thing that you need to try and must try, is their signature baked buns with BBQ pork.

from upper left and clockwise:
#1 Baked Buns w/ BBQ Pork (3pcs)  SGD$4.50--- recommended
#2 Pork Dumpling w/ Shrimp (4pcs)  SGD$5.00
#3 Glutinous Rice w/ Lotus Leaf  SGD$5.00
#4 Congee w/ Lean Pork, Century Egg & Salted Egg  SGD$4.20
#5 Poached Fresh Seasonal Vegetables  SGD$5.50
#6 Vermicelli Roll w/ Shrimps  SGD$5.50
de signature baked buns with BBQ pork is actually a combination of a smaller size HK pineapple bun with char siewlike I said, food wasn't really worth for an hour queue. maybe consider takeaway?

5) The Burger Bar by Fatboy's Concepts | Marina Square Shopping Mall.
nearest MRT: Esplanade, also accessible from City Hall and Promenade.
this burger bar is a mini-me of its original fat big brother, Fatboy’s. if you have a dream to build your own perfect burger all you need to do is to order through de iPad (self-service). choices of bun like honey oat, sesame and brioche accompanied by pork, beef and lamb patties with toppings and sauces at your choice. de burger bar also offer sides like fries and onion rings.
we were here on Tuesday.
but actually we passed by this place everydayyyyy and I looked at de free bacon on Mondays every time.

from upper left and clockwise:
#1 Saam's customised cheeseburger  SGD$7.50
with add-ons:
**sesame seed bun
**pork patty
**swiss cheese
**shredded lettuce
**bacon slice that he accidentally removed from de iPad and only realized after payment and was a bit upset
**honey baked ham  SGD$2.00
**sliced portobello  SGD$3.50
**honey mustard  SGD$0.50
#2 Burger of de Month (pork)  SGD$10.00
#3 Crispy Onion Ring  SGD$5.50--- highly recommended
onion rings were fresh and crispy and didn't taste like any from a frozen bag into de fryer. overall, we were satisfied with our burgers. be prepare for a messy dining experience especially when your burger is over-stuffed.

6) Llaollao | Marina Square Shopping Mall.
nearest MRT: Esplanade, also accessible from City Hall and Promenade.
it is a good choice (healthy frozen yogurt hahaaa) especially after a meal at The Burger Bar because de shop is located just beside each other. fortunately, there weren't much of a queue when we were there.

Sanum  SGD$6.90--- highly recommended
it simply means yogurt with 3 fruits (mango + blueberry + strawberry), 1 crunch (kitkat) and 1 sauce (chocolate sauce). these combinations were chosen based on own preference. frozen yogurt wasn't too sour nor too sweet, moreover, they were very generous with their serving.

7) Paris Baguette Cafe.
a friend of mine once introduced this Korean bakery's Royal Pudding to me when we were in Singapore. not exactly has a 'pudding' kind of texture, it comes with a creamy and smooth milky texture. besides pudding, Paris Baguette also offer a wide range of breads, cakes, as well as brunch. we have visited one of de outlets located at Bugis Junction.

Mango (SGD$4.50) and Original Royal Pudding (SGD$4.00)--- highly recommended
if you have tried something similar in Lavender back in KL, I can guarantee de Royal Pudding in Paris Baguette tasted 10 times better. if you're a mango maniac, do opt for de mango flavour as it didn't taste like any artificial mango. de correct way of eating de Royal Pudding is to first mix everything together or not you'll leave too much of de sweet bottom layer of caramel at de end. ice and foils are available for takeaway.

they looked happy.

8) Yu Kee Food House 友记家传鸭饭 | Liang Seah Street, North Bridge Road.
nearest MRT: you don't need to know
craving for a hawker breakfast in Singapore definitely is not a good idea unless you are equipped with a proper guide. through a few dinning experience, Singapore hawker food has always at my bottom list ask me where to get de worst wanton mee. today, I've decided to give another chance.

to avoid huge disappointment, we only ordered a duck rice set for SGD$6.00 which consisted of a bowl of stewed sauce rice, boneless duck, egg, beancurd, scarce a little bit of braised peanuts, salted vegetables, bean sprouts, and a bowl of herbal-based soup not exactly a soup (mimics taste of stew sauce- diluted kind). I think they were trying to cut de duck meat into de thickness of a bean sprout. sad to say de rice was pretty dry and it wasn't fragrant. de accompanied sambal wasn't that great either for a Malaysian taste. we also ordered a standard breakfast set at SGD$3.30 (2 fresh eggs + toast + teh C).

9) Cat Socrates | Bras Basah Complex (located at second floor).
nearest MRT: Bras Basah
something unusual can be done if you're getting bored with KL mimic shopping complexes in Singapore. there is no particular shop that I want to recommend in Bras Basah Complex because it is lil run down place except for this shop called Cat Socrates. as de name suggested, besides selling items decorated with cats, they are also selling slightly more interesting stationary, home decor items and other vintage merchandise. if you're lucky you may also meet de resident cat that really looks like a fat Garfield.

a small dessert plate for SGD$7.90.

10) Golden Mile Complex | Beach Road.
nearest MRT: you don't need to know
this place is also known as de Little Thailand in Singapore. if you're brave enough you may try de stalls which de Thais often patronise. for us, we've sticked to a safer choice at Diandin Leluk Thai Restaurant (3 shops in total with air-conditioning) but it was truly a waste of stomach quota. if you're thinking of de authentic taste of Thailand, don't ever think about this place. de only thing good is perhaps de supermarket at second floor that sells interesting Thai food items. I would not recommend to come alone because you may pass by various bars and discos that seemed a bit rowdy.

from upper left and clockwise:
#1 Stir-Fried Kangkong w/ Sambal Belacan
#2 Minced Pork w/ Basil and Egg
#3 Tomyam Seafood Soup
#4 Thai Fish Cakes
sorry to say de kangkong belacan was inferior to Malaysian taste. de minced pork with basil leaves was more to Chinese than Thai. tomyam soup has got a lot of not so fresh ingredients but they just didn't give a distinctive flavour to de soup besides spiciness. we didn't bother to order mango with sticky rice because everything was disappointing. this place was actually a recommended eatery but I guess it went downhill over time. #notworthgoinganymore

11) Accommodation : Marina Mandarin Singapore.
for an Executive room, we took de special offer by Citibank Premiermiles for 3 nights at RM1700+ (including taxes) with free wifi. rooms facing MBS view are also available but of course, at a higher price. overall, we were quite satisfied with de hotel standing shower probably need more cleaning at de edge and corner I'm OCD too. location wise it is also very convenient as it is attached to Marina Square Shopping Centre which is accessible to MRT station. there will be simulated bird chirping in de morning but it can get quite noisy at night as de echoes is really loud owing to de structure of de building.

a very modern kind of HBD design from de outside.
it may also look inception-isn at de same time. de hotel has doors to access to people's dreams Marina Square Shopping Centre at 4th floor. check in is also at de 4th floor but just remember to look up and enjoy de stunning high atrium.
a bird eye's view of de beautiful atrium.
this is just too OCD. oops de armchairs between de red sofa on first right are out of position.
