THE FOOD

1) 一樂燒鵝 Yat Lok Restaurant | Stanley St, Central.
roasted meat is one of de HK's core dishes and Yat Lok is claim to being one of de best with roasted goose. I remembered from de street, this restaurant has a cramped storefront and one could easily bypass this place without much thought (it happened in our first visit). no matter what, we definitely will not miss de place this time.

#1 鵝脾瀨 (goose drumstick rice noodle) HKD 108 ---highly recommended
de best part of roast goose was obviously de skin. although it might be a lil greasy on touch, de goose drumstick was pretty juicy and tastyde soup flavour was hearty and infused with fragrant. I personally prefer this combination. heavenly!

#2 鵝脾飯 (roast goose drumstick rice) HKD 108 ---recommended
de roast goose was served with plain white rice and if compared to rice noodle, have it together will give a feeling of fullness faster. noticed that de price in Yat Lok did not come cheap, but we both enjoyed it so much. dining at odd hours may be best to beat de crowds.

2) 大家樂 Cafe de Coral Chek Lap Kok Airport.
it'd be virtually impossible to avoid coming across Cafe de Coral at least once because they were located all over de places in HK.

for a more affordable price, this is another fast food cafe serving roasted goose that I enjoyed in HK. rice noodles wasn't as good as Yat Lok but de cooked fragrant rice was awesome.

3) 德興隆豆腐鋪 Tak Hing Lung | Marble Rd, North Point.
we went back and forth few times from de start because this shop was completely hideous from de outside (they have market stalls blocking at de front) and perseverance did pay off. in HK, you would probably receive a turndown treat if you're trying to get directions from de locals. HK police gives me a friendly image, but isn't it hilarious to approach them and ask for de location of a tofu shop?

#1 豆花 (tofu pudding - hot) HKD 8 ---recommended
#2 生煎包 (pan fried pork bun) HKD 5
#3 煎釀豆腐 (pan fried stuffed tofu) HKD 7
operated since 1960, this third generation tofu shop still produces tofu and other soy foods using de traditional hand method to ensure de quality is never compromised. I dare not say it is de best in HK, but at least you're able to get your tofu and soy fix. I would also recommend their soy bean milk. it has just de right amount of sweetness. please get it served hot if possible.

4) 德記潮州菜館 Tak Kee Chiu Chou Restaurant | Belcher's St, Kennedy Town, Western District.
Chiu Chou cuisine features flavour depending much on de freshness and quality of de ingredients for taste in contrary to most other Chinese cuisines which are usually heavy-handed cookingrecommended by a friend, we decided to explore de eatery and pay a visit to Tak Kee as we heard some say it is one of de best traditional Chiu Chou restaurants in Hong Kong.

from upper left and clockwise :
#1 蠔餅 (oyster omelette) HKD 78
#2 鹵水大鵝肝拼鵝肉片 (braised goose meat and liver) HKD 198 ---highly recommended
#3 芋泥 (dessert - taro puree) HKD28 ---recommended
#4 前菜 (appetizer - pickled cabbage) HKD 8 ---recommended
#5 胡椒豬肚湯 (pepper pork tripe soup) HKD 58 ---recommended
#6 蚝仔粥 (oyster congee) HKD 38 ---highly recommended
braised meat is definitely not to be missed since it is de staple in Chiu Chou cuisine. in fact, de braised goose in Tak Kee did not disappoint us. while dipping de tender meat slice into de vinegar helped to remove fats, de braising sauce was light and in a good balance between sweet and saltyI'm not a fan of goose liver but de boy seemed to enjoy it very much. for pepper pork tripe soup, fiery and pepper enough, was just perfect for pepper lovers. my winner was de oyster congee. served with fresh oysters, this was de watery version of congee with rice sitting loosely at de bottom of de bowl. simple dish, and it made a delicious combo with de pickled cabbage given as appetizer. oyster omelette, on de other hand, wasn't really impressive. portion was big but we lacked interest after eating at some point because it was too calorically dense too full. to complete de Chiu Chou experience, remember to order de famous dessert "orh nee" aka taro puree.

5) 澳洲牛奶公司 Australia Dairy Company | Parkes St, Jordan.

from upper left and clockwise :
#1 蛋白燉鮮奶 (steamed egg white w/ milk pudding) HKD 28 ---recommended
#2 火腿通粉 (macaroni soup w/ ham) HKD 28 (front)
杏汁燉雞蛋 (steamed almond & egg pudding - hot) HKD 28 (back) ---recommended
#3 炒蛋多士 (scrambled egg toast) HKD 20 ---highly recommended
many have complained of de horrendous service in HK Cha Chaan Teng due to de nature of fiery temper in this fast-paced city. well, I would suggest de tips in hope for a pleasant dining experience is to do your homework and study what to order first before you come to de restaurantto avoid de hassle you can consider their set meal but surely they do not only offer just one type of set meal. moreover, you need time to digest de menu to get de food you want because de Mandarin is somewhat different from what we had learned back in school we did not learn Cantonese anyway. maybe breakfast set (早餐 HKD 32is able to cater all de need but please ensure it is scrambled egg (炒蛋 caau daan) because you wouldn't want to miss de best.

6) 義順牛奶公司 Yee Shun Milk Company (Jordan) | Pilkem St.

馳名雙皮燉奶 (steamed milk in two films) HKD 34 ---recommended
looking closely to a liquid, de steamed milk has a soft and smooth texture comparable to tofu. you can even opt for flavours, such as red bean, ginger juice, chocolate or coffee. knowingly some may compare this place to Australian Dairy Company and I would say I prefer de latter for a complete breakfast set.

7) 金華冰廳 Kam Wah Cafe  | Bute St, Mong Kok.

得獎菠蘿油 (butter polo bun) HKD 10 ---highly recommended
de polo bun has a crusty top and was served up warm with a giant slab butter. it definitely live up to de expectation of an award wining bun.

8) 檀島咖啡餅店 Honolulu Coffee Shop | Henessy Rd, Chai Wan.
from upper left and clockwise:
#1 蛋撻 (egg tart) HKD 8 ---recommended
#2 猪扒汤意粉/火腿奄列/奶茶 (Set G) (spaghetti soup w/ pork chop+ham omelette+HK style milk tea) HKD 52  ---recommended
#3 鮮油菠蘿包 (butter polo bun) HKD 11
I began to like pasta in soup which is regarded as a staple of any breakfast offered in almost every Cha Chaan Teng in HK. I personally prefer Honolulu compared to Australian Dairy Company as de broth in this good bowl was kept light but flavourful at de same time. egg tart featured a light flaky crust and was soft, and delicious. de texture of polo bun, however, was dry even with butter (cold butter) and I'd rather go to Kam Wah. apart from food, I learnt that de direct translation of omelette to Cantonese is "奄列" (am lit).

9) 福元湯圓 Food Yuen | Fortress Hill.

from upper left :
#1 蛋白燉奶 (steamed egg white w/ milk pudding) HKD 26
#2 黑芝麻湯圓 (black sesame glutinous rice ball) (5 pcs) HKD 24 ---highly recommended
we have ordered a chilled version of steamed egg white pudding and only later we realized not all places make good pudding. we expect a silky smooth texture but de pudding turned out rough and hard, mimicking de texture of hard jelly. nevertheless, we were very happy with de black sesame glutinous rice balls in ginger syrup (choice of black sesame soup available) and these glutinous balls were thin and smooth. when I took a tiny bite of de glutinous rice ball, de rich and aromatic black sesame filling slowly oozed out and it was absolutely divine.

THE ACCOMODATION

JW Mariott Hotel Hong Kong | Pacific Place, 88 Queensway.
JW is located within Pacific Place and has an easy access to Admiralty MTR (just below de hotel), thus making traveling around city much quicker and convenient.

we had a 3-night stay in de Executive Room at JW. de room was clean, fairly spacious and filled with modern convenience like motorized curtains. de large king bed made us felt like sleeping on cloud, and in JW they even offer a pillow menu if you like a particular type of pillow.
de room came with a complimentary access to de Executive Lounge, where we could enjoy our breakfast buffet, afternoon tea, evening hors d'oeuvres (more like a dinner buffet) and beverage service, including wine and spirits. needless to say, for food de selection was amazing. de lounge offered a range of quality food such as dimsum, skewers, salad, desserts, cheese, and cold cuts, from typical western breakfast to Asian inspired dishes, you name it. don't be surprised as de lounge could be very crowded at one point there would be a waiting list to be seated. in return we received a complimentary dining privilege at JW Cafe due to long queue (spoilt with more choices!) good service overall in de hotel and we felt indulged by their level of care and attention. it was truly one of de best hotel experiences that we have ever had.

if you're interested to get into jogging (after eating too much) or to explore de greener side of HK, de popular place to head to is de Bowen Road, which is located on de mountain side above Wanchai District. this road is closed to vehicles and is completely adequate for joggers and dog walkers (you will see a lot of cool dogs). on top of that, de bonus of this running path is its wonderful and spectacular views you can never forget.

till next time, bye Hong Kong!
